South Barn is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty in South Devon near Start Point lighthouse. There are numerous sandy or pebble beaches close by (Mattiscombe, Lannacombe, Slapton, Blackpool Sands, Mill Bay at East Portlemouth, South and North Sands at Salcombe ) Also nearby are several characterful pubs such as the Pigs Nose in East Prawle, the Cricket Inn in Beesands and the Millbrook Inn in South Pool, as well as the many restaurants of Dartmouth, Salcombe and Kingsbridge.

For families there are child friendly attractions such as Paignton Zoo, Woodlands Theme Park, Pennywell Farm, Plymouth Acquarium, Start Point Lighthouse or steam train attractions in the area.

Dartmouth and Thurlestone golf courses are nearby. You can sail, windsurf, kitesurf, surf, canoe or fish locally. You can walk to the South West coast path from the house.

For birdwatchers Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve is less than a mile away. Designated a site of Special Scientific Interest it is recognised as a wetland with an important place in Britain's natural heritage. The main feature is the Lower Ley, which is the largest natural lake in south-west England. Although it is only separated from the sea by a narrow shingle bar, it is entirely freshwater.

Local towns include the historic naval town of Dartmouth, the lovely resort of Salcombe, Kingsbridge, a riverside market town and Totnes another riverside market town with a special alternative flavour. Paignton and Torquay can be reached via the Dartmouth ferries. Plymouth is about an hour away by car. Dartmoor is also in easy reach and there are a number of English Heritage castles and National Trust properties locally.
